The Patrick A. Nutt Endowed Scholarship
This new scholarship will cover travel costs in two of Longwood Gardens‘ outstanding education programs. It will be an opportunity for prospective international students when travel to and from Longwood Gardens (Kennett Square, PA) would be an extraordinary expense or hardship. A Longwood advisory committee will begin accepting annual applications once the endowment level reaches $30,000. Then each year they will choose a worthy recipient.
Patrick Nutt immigrated to the United States from the United Kingdom in 1953 after completing his education at Kew Gardens. He always had a soft spot for international students and did whatever he could to encourage and help them succeed. Over his many decades at Longwood Gardens, scores of students graduated from their international programs and went on to work in botanical gardens around the world. Pat stayed in touch with many of them and constantly praised their accomplishments.
This Scholarship honors Patrick and is the perfect way to continue helping international students at Longwood Gardens, as he did for almost 40 years. Please make a donation now to help celebrate the 86th anniversary of his birth with a big step towards the goal of granting scholarships.
International Internship & Training Programs
Longwood Garden’s educational mission is a global one. Their international programs have an outstanding, and well earned, reputation around the world. Every year up to ten aspiring gardeners, educators, librarians, marketers, and horticultural experts travel from other countries to study at Longwood as interns or trainees. Both of these opportunities are authorized by the U.S. Department of State for a J-1 Visa and allow participants to expand their knowledge in one of four areas:
- Ornamental Horticulture
- Library Science
- Marketing and Public Relations
- Patrick Nutt, the perpetual teacher
International Internship Program
The program is open to students currently enrolled in and pursuing studies at a degree or certificate-granting post-secondary academic institution outside the United States or a student who has graduated from such an institution no more than 12 months prior to his or her exchange visitor program begin date.
International Training Program
The program is for individuals with a degree or professional certificate from a post-secondary academic institution outside the United States. They need at least 1 year of prior related work experience in their occupational field from their home country. They may also have five years of work experience in their occupational field and then enter the United States to participate in a structured and guided work-based training program in that field.
